A course that teaches students how to compose and arrange music, as well as the fundamentals of sound manipulation. The major includes training in ear training, melody, counterpoint, complicated harmony, modulation, chromaticism, improvisation, progressions, composition, instrumentation, orchestration, electronic and computer applications, the study of specific musical styles, and the cultivation of original creative abilities. Students who enroll in CSMA's music theory program will benefit greatly from their time spent learning an instrument. In advanced music theory courses, students are introduced to the fundamentals of composition, music history, and the analysis of musical forms. Reading, writing, and listening abilities are honed to help students retain and expand upon the information presented in individual tutoring sessions. If you take private lessons with CSMA, you can get a 50% discount on one Core Curriculum class per semester (except summer). To meet the needs of its more advanced students, CSMA provides a wide range of Music Theory courses.
