Gerontology

Gerontology is the field that investigates the many facets of aging, including its sociocultural, psychological, cognitive, and biological dimensions.Different from geriatrics, which focuses on the care of older patients with preexisting conditions, gerontology focuses on preventing illness in the elderly. Researchers and professionals from many disciplines (including but not limited to biology, nursing, medicine, criminology, dentistry, social work, physical and occupational therapy, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, economics, politics, geography, pharmacy, public health, housing, and anthropology) make up the field of gerontology. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, gerontology encompasses several related subjects. The government's planning and management of nursing homes, studying the impact of an aging population on society, and creating homes that help the elderly feel at home are all policy concerns.Dr. Lawton, a behavioral psychologist at the Philadelphia Geriatric Center, was one of the pioneers in recognizing the need for homes specifically adapted for the elderly, particularly those with dementia.
