German Language and Literature

Changes occurred in medieval and Renaissance German literature and language. Beginning in the 1200s, German progressively replaced Latin as the language of choice for official documents. This shift resulted in the developing of robust and varied bilingual literature in Germany. In particular, works from the Sturm und Drang, Romanticism, and Realism periods of German literature are renowned for their exquisite prose and character development. You can learn a lot about Germany and German culture and history by reading certain books written in German. Numerous seminal works in Western thought and culture—across the disciplines of philosophy, literature, music, art history, theology, psychology, chemistry, physics, engineering, and medicine—have been written and are being written in German. Germany is still a popular tourist destination because of its interesting history, which can be seen in its many historic buildings, castles, palaces, cathedrals, and monuments; its beautiful scenery, including its many mountains and forests; and its great cuisine and beer.
