Endodontics/Endodontology

Endodontists focus on preventing and treating apical periodontitis, an infection of the tooth's pulp, and other injuries and diseases of the dental pulp and periradicular region. Endodontists routinely investigate the root causes of dental discomfort and treat underlying diseases. In the undergraduate curriculum guidelines for Endodontology, the European Society of Endodontology outlines the educational requirements for training a dentist in the specialized field of dentistry known as endodontics. Endodontic treatment may involve various techniques To preserve the health of the dental pulp. When the dental tissue is injured or ill, the goal of treatment is to keep the surrounding periradicular tissues as healthy as possible. The goal of treating apical periodontitis is to restore the health of the periradicular tissues, and this is typically accomplished through root canal therapy, sometimes in conjunction with surgical endodontics. Differential diagnosis and treatment of orofacial pain of pulpal and periradicular origin; pulp extirpation and root canal treatment; root canal treatment in cases of apical periodontitis; (root canal) retreatment in cases of post-treatment apical periodontitis; surgical endodontics; bleaching of endodontically treated teeth; treatment procedures related to colic; these are all within the purview of endodontics.
