Dentistry
Dentistry is the field of study and practice devoted to diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions affecting the mouth and teeth. Congenital disabilities of the mouth, such as cleft palate, can be treated and corrected by dentists as part of the dental care process. Orthodontics, dental orthopedics, periodontics, prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral and maxillofacial pathology, endodontics, public health dentistry, and oral and maxillofacial radiology are just some of the many subspecialties within dentistry.
Hospitals typically provide three different types of dental care:
- Bedside care for people who have been admitted for other medical reasons
- Care for people who have been admitted for purely dental conditions
- Clinical procedures are normally provided in a dental office for ambulatory and outpatients.
Hospital-based dental care can be provided privately, for a fee, or through public health insurance or other government-funded programs like the National Health Service in the United Kingdom or the Provincial Medicare Plan (surgery only) in Canada. Hospital dental services have grown steadily in the United States and Canada, and in the United Kingdom, they have long been an established part of dental care and education.
