The field of dentistry, known as dental public health, is concerned with improving people's oral health and reducing the prevalence of dental disease through concerted community-wide initiatives. Dental public health focuses on the collective, rather than the individual, requirements of communities at the regional, state, and national levels to ensure that all people, including those with special needs and underserved populations, have access to high-quality oral health care. When it comes to preventing and controlling dental diseases on a societal level, dental public health emphasizes the environment, human behavior and lifestyle, and medical care. It also includes dental health education, dental research, and the management of group dental care programs. Specialists in dental public health must be well-versed in many areas, including public health administration, research methodology, oral disease prevention and control, dental care delivery, and dental care financing. The American Board of Dental Public Health (ABDPH) has strict eligibility requirements for dental public health specialists, including completing an approved dental education program and demonstrating a strong moral and ethical character. They should also have public health training and relevant work experience.
