Architectural and Building Sciences/Technology

Building Science and Architecture courses provide the most current subject matter in highly specialized fields, including sustainable building design, walls and windows systems, roof systems, cladding, glazing, HVAC, and insulation systems.  Not offered at other colleges or universities in Canada, these unique courses are taught by practicing building science specialists and will prepare you for the Building Science Specialist (BSS) designation examinations, established by the Building Science Specialist Board of Canada (BSSB). Lighting and daylight design, acoustics, solar design, building conservation, and energy-conscious design are just some of the topics covered in Architectural and Building Sciences/Technology courses, which are focused on the application of cutting-edge technology to the design, construction, and retrofitting of existing buildings, as well as the efficient operation of these structures. Architectural drafting, computer-aided drafting and design, construction methods and materials, environmental systems, building codes and standards, structural principles, cost estimation, planning documentation, visual communication skills, display production, and architectural office management are also covered. Graphics, mathematics, drawing, history, physics, and 3D modeling are just some of the disciplines explored. Some of the engineering courses and environmental and sustainability studies that students will participate in will be taught using computer-aided design (CAD) software. You can become an architect, a civil drafter, a professor of architecture, a manager in the field of architecture or engineering, or even just a teacher at a community college if you choose to focus on these subjects.
