African Studies

The African Studies Major is a program that allows students to deepen their knowledge of the African continent from a variety of perspectives. These perspectives include Africa's place in world history; Africa's role in the global political economy; Africa's place in the new global international relations; Africa's role in international development; peace studies; conflict resolution; and courses that acknowledge the cultural, racial, and ethnic diversity of the African continent. Students in the curriculum will learn how to analyze African issues from a variety of perspectives, including history, culture, geography, economics, and politics, preparing them for jobs in a wide variety of fields and further study at the graduate level. Earning a Bachelor of Arts in African Studies can help students interested in a wide variety of fields, including but not limited to history, policy, sociology, culture, entertainment, language, law, foreign affairs, and education, to become outstanding, productive members of their communities, the United States, and the global community.
