African-American/Black Studies

With a focus on the history and culture of African American communities in California and the West, as well as the historical and contemporary effects of global issues on African American communities, the goal of the African American Studies program is to equip students with a critical understanding of the historical, cultural, social, and political experience of African Americans from a variety of academic perspectives. This program equips students with the necessary analytic tools and methods of interpretation for studying the African American experience in particular, and ethnic and cultural study more generally, by drawing on courses in American Studies and emphasizing comparative as well as interdisciplinary study. Students intending to work in professions such as education, human services, business, media, and public administration in the United States and overseas, as well as those interested in combining studies in the humanities and social sciences, will find this program particularly useful.
