Wholesale and Retail Buyers, Except Farm Products
Career Snapshot
If you believe you were created to shop, you may make a living doing it. Products and commodities are purchased by wholesale and retail purchasers for resale to consumers. They have two objectives: to purchase things that their company can resell for a profit and to expand their consumer base.
Buyers do a successful job if they consistently select items that clients appreciate and perceive to be a good value. When warehouses and retail racks are left with unsold product that must be sold at clearance pricing, buyers fail. The most difficult aspect of the job is forecasting which things will be popular. Buyers must conduct study to accomplish this.
They look for inspiration at trade exhibitions and showrooms. They review prior sales records and assess economic situations to try to identify customer patterns. To access and process this information, computer skills are required. Buyers carefully consider cost and quality before placing an order, and they may bargain hard with a provider to get a lower price. Before authorising payment, the buyer arranges for delivery and ensures that everything arrives in good condition.
This job comes with a lot of responsibility. Errors in sales data show up fast. Keeping up with trends necessitates significant hours of work. Buyers typically have a bachelor's degree and years of retail experience. This is a vocation that requires solid planning abilities, decisiveness, and a willingness to follow your instincts and take risks.
