ABOUT TAX EXAMINER OR COLLECTOR, OR REVENUE AGENT CAREERS

Tax examiners, collectors, and revenue agents all work together to ensure that citizens pay their fair amount. They work at all levels of government, ranging from rustic town halls to tall federal office complexes. Every day, they apply accounting, legal, and interpersonal skills to keep the tax rolls up to date.

Tax collectors are in charge of charging and collecting taxes on a local level. Even with technology, this activity can result in mountains of paperwork. They assist taxpayers in resolving unpaid tax obligations.

Examiners and revenue agents sift through tax returns and other data to verify accounting techniques and determine whether taxpayers and corporations have complied with complex tax regulations. In the event that an audit is required, the revenue agent meets with taxpayers and their representatives to settle differences and, in some cases, to revise their tax bill.

The qualifications for each post differ depending on local laws and agency standards. Tax collectors in various states can be appointed or elected. However, in general, businesses prefer candidates with a bachelor's degree or managerial experience.

Because tax and revenue specialists are rarely lauded in our popular culture, other characteristics include a feeling of purpose, self-confidence, and an understanding that every community relies on taxes and revenues to deliver public services. This work is critical to national security.
