Surgical Assistants
Career Snapshot
Have you ever seen surgery footage and wondered who all those individuals in the operating room were? Surgical technologists and surgical assistants ensure that the operating room is prepared for each procedure and assist surgeons with surgical procedures. Surgical technicians and assistants are familiar with the language and tools required for a wide range of procedures. They help the surgical team scrub and put on gloves, masks, and sterile gowns, as well as prepare the equipment and supplies. During the procedure, they ensure that surgeons have the instruments they need at all times. They may hold retractors, cut sutures, and apply or help apply bandages before transferring patients to recovery. They are also in charge of counting sponges, needles, and other devices before and after the procedure. Surgical assistants may operate suction equipment or stitch a wound in addition to other technician jobs. In hospitals and outpatient surgery centres, surgical technologists and assistants work. Their job needs them to be at ease around blood, bodily fluids, and critically ill patients. They occasionally work overnight shifts or are on call in case of an emergency. A certificate or associate's degree in surgical technology is required for surgical technicians. Surgical assistants often have prior experience as a surgical technologist or have finished a rigorous surgical assisting education programme. The work of surgical technologists ranges from the ordinary and normal to the urgent and crucial, all with the goal of preserving lives and assisting in healing.
