ABOUT REHABILITATION COUNSELOR CAREERS

Life provides challenges to everyone, but for others, those challenges are exacerbated by disabilities. Rehabilitation counsellors assist persons in overcoming difficulties. They offer physical assistance and emotional support to clients who are dealing with the repercussions of illness, disease, birth defects, accidents, or daily stress, and they guide them back to productive lives.

They assess individuals' strengths and weaknesses, provide counselling, and arrange for medical care, vocational training, and job placement. They work to improve their clients' ability to live freely. The rehabilitation counsellor serves as a vital link between the disabled client, his or her family, workplace, doctors, teachers, and anyone else who can offer assistance and understanding.

Good communication skills are essential since the counsellor frequently interviews people other than the client to establish a thorough profile of what can be done and how to achieve it. Finding the correct school, career training, therapy, or employer could be the goal. Alternatively, the goal could be to identify ways to employ technology to reduce the impacts of the impairment and increase independence. In any case, the rehabilitation counsellor seeks to assist clients in becoming taxpayers rather than tax users.

Rehabilitation counsellors must be compassionate, aggressive, and well-trained. Although colleges offer four-year rehabilitation counsellor degrees, many businesses require a master's degree in the subject as well as certification from the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification. A licence is now required in several states. A rehabilitation counsellor can be the difference between a dark future and a hopeful future for patients living with a disability.
