Recycling Coordinators
Career Snapshot
Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Workers and coordinators in the recycling industry work to decrease waste and keep pollution out of the earth's air, water, and soil. Workers in recycling and reclamation collect recyclable materials from curbside and transport them to recycling facilities. They prepare and sort recyclable items such as metals, glass, paper, and plastics before loading them into conveyors and loading bundles onto trucks with forklifts. Some construction workers sort building debris and select valuable metals for recycling. They can also use a blowtorch to disassemble and cut apart appliances and autos, as well as safely dispose of hazardous material. Recycling coordinators manage curbside and drop-off recycling programmes for municipalities or private businesses. They ensure that recyclable materials are transported from households and businesses to recycling centres to be reused. They also keep meticulous records to track the effectiveness of recycling programmes. Recycling coordinators hire and educate employees as well as encourage recycling programmes in local communities. They may bargain for the sale of recyclable commodities, such as paper or aluminium, to brokers and businesses for resale. Most of these positions require a high school diploma or similar. Most recycling coordinators have managerial or management experience, and some have a bachelor's or associate's degree.
