Producers and Directors
Career Snapshot
A lot of effort goes into creating entertainment magic. Producers, directors, and actors are responsible for this work. The majority of the work they acquire are in places other than Broadway and Hollywood, such as local theatres, television and radio studios, comedy clubs, circuses, and even rodeos.
Actors entertain and communicate by portraying dramatic characters. Many actors carve out a career playing everything from product pitches in commercials to starring roles in plays. In addition, many actors work outside of the industry to supplement their income.
Members of organisations such as Actors' Equity, The Screen Actors Guild, and AFTRA assist actors in obtaining insurance coverage even when they do not have a regular job.
Plays or scripts are interpreted by directors. They also audition and choose cast members, lead rehearsals, and oversee the work of the cast and crew. They frequently have creative authority over the entire project, including the set, costumes, choreography, and music.
Producers control the purse strings. They organise funding for projects and decide on the size, cost, and content of a production. Their salary is frequently a share of the earnings of a show. The director is hired by the producer, who then recruits the actors. And because money is paid up front to prepare something that an audience may or may not approve, show business is notoriously unstable.
There are college courses available in all sectors of the profession, but performers, directors, and producers come from a wide range of backgrounds and training. What they have in common is a strong desire to pursue a dream - the dream of making a life through make-believe.
