Naturopathic Physicians
Career Snapshot
Naturopathic doctors and conventional doctors have many similarities, yet they approach medical therapy differently. While naturopathic doctors, or NDs, are educated in the same biomedical sciences as medical doctors, NDs emphasise disease prevention, nutrition, and wellbeing. NDs treat the core causes of illness and enlist the body's self-healing capacities, whereas medical practitioners treat symptoms. NDs see patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly. NDs interview patients to document symptoms, analyse a patient's medical history, and give a diagnosis, suggestion, and prescription, much like any other doctor. NDs frequently use naturally occurring therapies found in foods, herbs, and vitamin supplements instead of prescription medicines. Alternative therapies include traditional Indian Ayurvedic or Chinese medicine, homoeopathy, mindfulness training, and biofeedback. They may order diagnostic treatments and lab testing from other doctors and consult with other healthcare specialists as needed to clarify a diagnosis. Naturopathic doctors work in private practise, clinics, and community health centres that also provide alternative medicine services including acupuncture, massage, and chiropractic. They study anatomy, physiology, biology, chemistry, pathology, diagnostics, and holistic and nontoxic remedies in four-year graduate-level naturopathic medical schools. State licence is currently accessible in some states, while others require NDs to practise under another medical degree.
