Mental Health Counselors
Career Snapshot
People with mental or emotional issues can benefit from the services of mental health counsellors. They begin by listening to determine what is wrong. They are educated to assist people in discussing a wide range of concerns, from depression to substance misuse and family conflicts. Mental health counsellors collaborate extensively with other specialists in their field, in addition to counselling their clients.
A patient, for example, may need to see a psychiatrist who can prescribe medicine or be referred to a social worker who leads a support group. Many mental health counsellors have their own practises or work for organisations. Others work in classrooms, senior centres, and even corporations. They usually work flexible hours, frequently in the evenings and on weekends.
It is a profession with national education, training, and clinical practise standards. Most states require some kind of certification or licensure. The professional organisation that oversees all counsellors is the American Mental Health Counselors Association. A master's degree in counselling, clinical work experience, and passing a licence exam in the state where you intend to practise are all required for membership.
Compassion and strength are required of mental health counsellors. It's not easy to listen to individuals who are going through difficult times, but knowing how to help them may be quite rewarding.
