Medical Equipment Repairers
Career Snapshot
The technology used to diagnose and treat patients has seen some of the most dramatic breakthroughs in medicine. Medical equipment repairers are responsible for installing and maintaining equipment ranging from huge x-ray units to little patient monitors.
Electric wheelchairs, mechanical lifts, hospital beds, and specialised automobiles are among the items fixed, as are biomedical equipment, hearing aids, and surgical tools. This is an extremely technical field. Repairers must be able to meticulously read complicated operating and repair manuals.
Hand and power tools, as well as specialised diagnostic equipment such as oscilloscopes, are employed. A solid understanding of electronics and mechanical engineering is required. Being ability to use sophisticated mathematics is also important.
Not all of the work is technical in nature. Repairers must be effective communicators since, once the machines are set up, doctors and other medical personnel must be instructed on how to use the equipment properly and safely. There is also paperwork tracking maintenance and repairs.
The majority of people learn this trade through on-the-job training. Electronics courses are available at vocational schools and community colleges. Additional training from the manufacturer or medical facility is frequently required. Many patients would not be alive today if not for these very advanced machines, which would not be able to run properly and safely without the assistance of medical equipment repairers.
