Mechanical Engineering Technologists and Technicians
Career Snapshot
Mechanical engineering technicians work alongside mechanical engineers to design, develop, test, and produce machinery, parts, and other mechanical equipment. They troubleshoot design issues, construct flow charts, prepare drawings, take precise measurements, plan manufacturing lines, conduct quality control testing, evaluate data, and write reports.
They can go from basic, routine chores under close supervision to more complex jobs under general supervision. Although an associate's degree in mechanical engineering is preferred, certain firms may accept a high school graduate with math and science courses or other practical training.
The majority of people work 40 hours a week in a laboratory, office, industrial plant, or on a construction site. Mechanical engineering workers can grow in responsibilities and receive a four-year degree to advance their careers.
