ABOUT MATERIALS ENGINEER CAREERS
TRANSCRIPT OF A VIDEO
Materials engineers are responsible for advances that make items endure longer and operate better, from lightweight metal bike frames to ceramic tile on the space shuttle. This innovator, also known as a "materials guy" in the industry, is essential in the production of any product. When given a plan for the item, he or she investigates how to create it in the lab.
It is sometimes necessary to create a new material by modifying the atomic and molecular structures of existing substances. The new material and its application are tested numerous times, with each outcome being recorded and analysed until the product satisfies design objectives. The engineer then devises the most efficient procedure for manufacturing the newly created materials in a factory.
Materials engineers work in a variety of industries and typically specialise in one area, such as metals or electronics. A bachelor's degree from a recognised engineering programme is required for entry-level work. Many occupations, however, demand master's and doctoral degrees. This is a multifaceted position that is part inventor, part scientist, and all problem solver.
