Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurses
Career Snapshot
A licenced practical nurse's (LPN) first priority is to aid people. LPNs give physical and emotional care to the sick, injured, and disabled. Specific responsibilities include taking a patient's blood pressure, beginning intravenous fluids, and aiding emergency department personnel during procedures. Because a patient's well-being is so dependent on the quality of care provided by LPNs, responsibility and emotional strength are required.
If you want to work in this field, you must be vigilant, able to detect changes in a patient's condition and respond quickly and decisively in any situation. Because LPNs play an active part in educating people how to stay healthy, you should be prepared to educate family members fundamental nursing tasks or speak to children about good health and eating practises.
This is a dangerous employment because you must be prepared to work with people who have contagious diseases. However, by adhering to safety standards and procedures, an LPN's career can be both safe and fulfilling.
