Insurance Adjusters, Examiners, and Investigators
Career Snapshot
When insured property is damaged or stolen, a 'claim' must be filed to notify the insurance company and seek recompense for the loss. Simple claims are dealt with over the phone. Larger or more sophisticated claims, on the other hand, are often allocated to insurance adjusters and examiners, commonly known as 'claim adjusters.'
It is their responsibility to interview the policyholder, analyse the damage, and determine how much compensation the insurance company will provide. They may also thoroughly investigate the claim, speaking with police officers, witnesses, and medical specialists to ensure that the claim is credible.
Some claims adjusters work with different types of insurance. Others specialise in areas such as fire damage, marine loss, vehicle damage, worker's compensation, and others. The combined task of protecting the company from insurance fraud while also authorising payments to people who have incurred a loss is both demanding and satisfying for many.
