Fine Artists, Including Painters, Sculptors, and Illustrators
Career Snapshot
For millennia, people have used art to express themselves and transmit ideas. Fine artists continue to express themselves via their art in the hopes that appreciating collectors would purchase their work.
Fine artists typically specialise in one or more mediums, such as painting or sculpture. Art forms such as computer printmaking and video art installations have emerged as a result of new technologies. Illustrators are those who develop images and designs for use in publications and commercial products.
Artists typically work alone in a studio, for example. They may be required to work with paints, inks, thinners, and other chemicals. An artist's professional life varies tremendously. The majority of fine artists work on commission. Some are treated like celebrities and command exorbitant prices. Others toil in obscurity to make a living.
The most successful artists not only make economically appealing works, but also understand the value of effective marketing. Although there are no specific educational prerequisites for success, fine artists typically hone their talents and refine their technique at art school and college.
Every culture's legacy includes fine art. Being an artist is supposed to be more of a labour of passion than a vocation.
