Detectives and Criminal Investigators
Career Snapshot
Few people are more important to everyone's safety and well-being than police officers and detectives, whether they are investigating a murder or burglary, providing first aid, breaking up a brawl, or simply patrolling an area to avoid crime. However, patrol cars are only one aspect of the story. Some cops operate as experts in firearms identification, handwriting and fingerprints, or microscopic examination behind the scenes. Others belong to special emergency response squads.
Some police officers may be promoted to detective after three to five years of service. Detectives work as plainclothes investigators, gathering facts and evidence for criminal cases. They question witnesses, analyse written records, undertake suspect surveillance, and question detainees.
It goes without saying that both police officers and detectives have perilous jobs. However, those who work in this field enjoy the gratification of knowing that they are making their cities, villages, and neighbourhoods safer for everyone.
