Dentists, General
Career Snapshot
Open your arms wide. Dentists diagnose and treat diseases with the teeth and oral tissues. They fill cavities, repair fractured teeth, extract teeth, and clean them. They create denture moulds to replace missing teeth and instruct patients on proper dental hygiene.
Dentists work with drills, x-ray machines, forceps, mirrors, and brushes. They protect themselves from infectious infections by wearing masks, gloves, and safety glasses.
While the majority of dentists practise general dentistry, others specialise in dental surgery, teeth straightening, or treating gum and bone illnesses of the mouth. 90% of all dentists start their own practises. Some dentists work in group practises, while others work for more established dentists, and the others work in hospitals, clinics, and research centres.
Weekend and nighttime hours are frequently required to meet the schedules of patients. Dentists with established or developing practises can expect to earn a lot of money. If you want to be a dentist, you must first complete two to four years of college-level pre-dental education before enrolling in a four-year approved dentistry school. You must pass a written board examination and receive a licence after graduating.
It takes a long time to become a dentist, but owning your own business and assisting others with their dental care makes dentistry a very fulfilling job.
