Cutters and Trimmers, Hand
Career Snapshot
Many materials, including carpet, fabric, and glass, are created and delivered in bulk. When it comes time to put these resources to use, hand cutters and trimmers are in high demand. They cut and trim to obtain the desired fit with hand-held and power tools.
Work might be repetitive, and bending and moving heavy materials may be required. Hand cutters and trimmers typically specialise on a single material. Whatever you cut, you'll need stable hands and the ability to follow a plan, pattern, or layout.
You must take extremely precise measurements; if you are even a quarter of an inch off, the material will be wasted and the job will have to be redone. These abilities are typically gained on the job, under the supervision of an experienced worker.
Some study their trade through a more official training programme, such as as a carpet cutter or fur cutter apprentice. This is clearly a profession for people who are confident in their talents while still being patient enough to work slowly and thoroughly.
