Carpenters
Career Snapshot
Anyone who enjoys working with wood or creating things should think about pursuing a career in carpentry. Carpenters are well-known in the construction industry for their work in cutting, shaping, and fastening wood and other building materials. However, carpenters also work in a variety of other settings, such as erecting rafters, joists, windows, and subflooring in office buildings.
Some people are exceptionally talented at installing hardwood floors, building bespoke kitchen cabinets, and making and installing beautiful trim. Others specialise in restoration and repair, whether it's for a 20-year-old house or a 200-year-old historical artefact.
Mastering this trade requires time, physical strength, and the ability to work with your hands. Math skills and a willingness to labour in all weather conditions are required, but there is always work for a talented carpenter, whether as part of a construction crew or as a self-employed handyperson.
