ABOUT CARGO AND FREIGHT AGENT CAREERS

Businesses require orders to be filled and shipments to be delivered as soon as possible. Cargo and freight agents are the folks that make this possible. Whatever the size, route, or type of the shipment, these agents handle the details of moving freight from origin to destination as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Cargo and freight agents take customer orders and arrange for the freight to be delivered to the loading platform. They plan the route and compile the relevant documentation, such as cargo descriptions, quantity, type, weight, and dimensions. If the products are being imported or exported, the agent is also in charge of obtaining the necessary customs clearances.

Agents ensure that cargo is categorised by destination and calculate shipping costs. When they arrive, they check for missing products and record damage before arranging payment and customer pick-up.

Although entry-level roles in this field often require only a high school diploma, experience with computers will be beneficial. They're used for everything from processing online orders to tracking shipments by barcode to filling out insurance paperwork. Specialized software assists cargo and freight agencies in expediting shipment movement in order to fulfil the growing demand for overnight delivery.

While these agents spend some of their time in an office, they are frequently located in terminals and loading docks, where the atmosphere is rarely temperature-controlled. Evening and weekend hours are standard. Freight and cargo agents can advance their careers to higher-paying management positions with extra training and experience. Cargo and freight are essential to commerce. This job is central to the entire system.
