ABOUT BUS DRIVER, SCHOOL OR SPECIAL CLIENT CAREERS

The school bus driver is a friendly figure in the lives of many young children. Every day, these people are in charge of securely delivering children to and from school. Students are picked up and dropped off at certain areas according to a predetermined route and schedule.

School bus drivers are educated to operate their vehicles safely and to keep the bus environment safe. Drivers must exercise extra caution when youngsters board or exit the bus. Because they work with young children, they must be kind and friendly. They must also be strong communicators. While the job is not physically demanding, it can be exhausting and frustrating, particularly in heavy traffic or terrible weather.

A commercial driver's licence, good hearing and eyesight, and a clean driving record are all required for school bus drivers. They only work throughout the school day and often drive one or two routes in the morning and afternoon.

Some drivers may work extra hours transporting students on field excursions or to sporting activities. They prepare weekly reports that record the number of trips or runs, the number of hours spent, the number of miles travelled, and the amount of fuel consumed. Some bus drivers work as independent contractors and own their own vehicles. Every school day, parents commit their children's life to school bus drivers. That's a big job with big obligations!
