Bus Drivers, School
Career Snapshot
The yellow school bus is perhaps the most well-known vehicle in the United States. School bus drivers bring students to and from school and other activities aboard those buses. Drivers pick up kids in the morning and return them home in the afternoon every school day. They also accompany pupils on field trips and to sporting events. Between morning and afternoon travels, some drivers work in schools as janitors, cafeteria employees, or mechanics. These drivers are only available when school is in session. School bus drivers are responsible for the safety of their passengers, attending to the needs of children with disabilities, and following the laws of the school district. The majority of firms prefer that drivers have a high school diploma or similar. All bus drivers must have a commercial driver's licence, or CDL, as well as school bus endorsements. Some employers provide the option to obtain a CDL while working. Whether it's a kindergartener's first day of school or a senior class college visit, school bus drivers make sure students arrive safely every day, year after year.
