Athletes and Sports Competitors
Career Snapshot
Fans of numerous sports enjoy the excitement and fun that organised athletic events give. A professional athlete will train or practise under the supervision of a trainer or coach. They attend sporting events to entertain supporters and promote the sport, as well as make public appearances.
Athletes must be in peak physical condition and risk significant injury, particularly in contact sports. Coaches and umpires, on the other hand, keep track of the athletes' progress. Coaches work with a particular team or individual to teach them the best techniques for competing in their sport.
Umpires, often known as referees or officials, keep score, apply and enforce the rules, and resolve disagreements between participants. Both coaches and officials must be able to communicate effectively and make split-second decisions. They must also be able to bear constant pressure and scrutiny from both fans and the press.
If you are talented enough to compete successfully for the restricted number of opportunities available in any of these occupations and are willing to travel, you may be rewarded with crowd appreciation and the personal gratification of working at a career you enjoy.
