Architects, Except Landscape and Naval
Career Snapshot
Every entryway, wall, and window in every building is where they are because someone chose to place them there. Someone else decided on the building materials, the traffic patterns, and even how people would feel when entering or exiting the building.
That'someone' was, of course, an architect. The same person may have been in charge of planning the plumbing, heating, and electrical systems, as well as supervising the building's construction.
Many states demand a degree from one of the 105 nationally approved architectural schools. The normal bachelor's degree programme lasts five years and includes courses that are so specialised that some credits gained may not be transferrable to a non-architecture programme.
It is not simple to become an architect, and competition for positions can be fierce. But it is well worth the effort because few things compare to seeing your ideas transformed into real structures where people will work and live.
